The book for the 8th CPCE General Assembly
“European Atlas of Liturgy – Protestant Perspectives on Worship Services”
“The CPCE is above all a worshipping community”, General Secretary Bishop Dr Michael Bünker recalls this observation by the Presidium of the CPCE in his preface to the “European Atlas of Liturgy”, which is being published to coincide with the General Assembly (September 2018, Basle). “The volume is a result of good collaboration with and between the member churches, which has intensified pleasingly in the field of liturgy in recent years,” adds Dr Jochen Arnold, the CPCE’s Liturgy Officer.
The Liturgy Atlas of the Community of Protestant Churches in Europe (CPCE) offers a theological foundation and a differentiated view of developments in the churches’ liturgy landscape. It contains contributions by experts in theory and practice from Denmark, Estonia, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Great Britain and Germany. Confessional characteristics and current challenges (e.g. multilingual services of worship) become clear alongside examples of successful forms of celebration, including alternative services of worship and open concepts such as “church night”.
“The subject of liturgy and the rapidly changing contextual conditions, such as migration, will also be of direct concern to us at the General Assembly,” says Rev. Adél Dávid from the CPCE, one of the editors of the collection. “The book should therefore not be regarded as the conclusion of a process, but rather as inspiration to adopt new ideas.”
The Liturgy Atlas compiled by the Community of Protestant Churches in Europe is being published by Evangelische Verlagsanstalt Leipzig in August 2018. Participants at the General Assembly will receive their copy in Basle.
Requests for interviews with the editors or authors and for review copies can be submitted via the head office of the CPCE (Public Relations Officer Ingrid Monjencs, email: firstname.lastname@example.org, tel.: +43 1 4791523 900, mobile: +43 699 18878 052).
