Dear sisters and brothers,

“In the Light of Christ – Called to Hope”.

This is the slogan for the 9th General Assembly of the Communion of Protestant Churches in Europe, to be held in Sibiu/Hermannstadt, Romania, from from 27 August to 2 September 2024.

At a time when basic values that were thought to be secure are once again being called into question, it is helpful to assure ourselves of the foundations of our life and faith and to orient ourselves accordingly.   The strapline wants to set a sign against defeatism because we Christians are not hopeless. The light of Christ also shines into our world today and nourishes hope in us, in our countries, in our churches.

Venue for the General Assembly

At the coming Assembly, we will be confronted by the special character of the location, which we want to respectfully accept and allow it to inspire us.

Transylvania, as part of the Republic of Romania, is a multicultural and multidenominational living space. Here we encounter not only different traditions, but also challenges typical of Eastern Europe and a post-communist society. The hosting churches reflect this. They are the German-speaking Evangelical Church of A.C., the Hungarian-speaking Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Romanian-speaking Methodist Church and the Hungarian-speaking Reformed Church.

Aims of the General Assembly

The General Assembly is the supreme body of the CPCE. It decides how the mission of our church communion is to be fulfilled in the years ahead. To achieve this, it receives the results of the work determined by the 8th General Assembly in Basle in 2018, it makes decisions about the new tasks facing the church communion as the basis for formulating the work directives for the forthcoming years,it elects a new Council to oversee the implementation of its resolutions and lead the CPCE until the next General Assembly, it provides a space in which church communion is realised in the form of communion in worship and in communal life, work and celebration.
